GGNRA Site Tour: Proposed tree thinning sites in Tam Valley

Thursday, March 18, 2010 -- 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm (**shuttle from community center at 12:50 pm)
Lead By: Jordan Reeser, Fuels Management Specialist for the S.F. Bay Area National Parks
Focus: Two Tree Thinning Project Sites in Tamalpais Valley -- "Every Site is Different"
1. Marin Drive / Miwok Trail 2. Upper Tam Valley
General Itinerary:
First we will visit the Marin Drive / Miwok Trail site which is a short walk from the park trail entrance near 1000 Marin Drive. Recent tree thinning has been in progress at this site since November. Then we will drive to Eastwood Park. From there, we will walk through the 2004 Tam Fire recovery area to the section of the eucalyptus grove where tree thinning is being planned. Be sure to wear shoes appropriate for hiking on uneven, and occasionally steep ground.

Logistics:
PARKING IS VERY LIMITED on Marin Drive.
IF WALKING: Meet at the trail entrance on Marin Drive at 1:00 pm.
IF DRIVING: Meet at the Tamalpais Valley Community Center at 12:50 pm. We will travel in vans to Marin Drive.
DIRECTIONS: Tamalpais Valley Community Center - 203 Marin Ave., Mill Valley, CA
From Mill Valley exit of Highway 1:
Go 0.1 mile on Hwy 1
Turn Left onto Tennessee Valley Road
Go 0.4 mi. to the intersection of Marin Avenue.
Turn Right.
Entrance to parking lot is immediately on the left.
DEPARTURE: 12:50 pm from community center to Marin Drive / Miwok Trail Project Site
Estimated departure from Marin Drive: 2:00 pm -- drive to Eastwood Park
*** Walk through fire site to Upper Tam Valley project area is STEEP for approximately 1/4 mile.
*** Dance class will be in progress at community center until 12:30 pm.
Parking lot will be full until this group leaves.
